Notes on a different topic # 23
Until death do us part

Once upon a time, long before the famous Marvel Cinematic Universe appeared, the Universal Film Company created its own cinematic universe in the center of which were scary monsters and tragic antiheroes. During the 1930s and 1940s, characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, and Mummies intersected in crossover tapes, fought against each other and gathered captured cinemas in cinemas. Subsequently, these classic horror lost their popularity - in Hollywood, instead of horror films came melodramas, historical paintings and musicals. And yet, the old monsters did not disappear anywhere - they just patiently waited for a good opportunity for a full-fledged comeback.

It would seem that in the mid-2010s, an ideal moment appeared for the revival of the gloomy universe of Universal - Marvel demonstrated that the future of entertaining films lies in interweaving franchises, while other studios have tried to follow this example. Warner Bros built DCEU, Fox thought about expanding the X-Men franchise, and Paramount planned spin-offs about Transformers. At that time, a successful horror universe was already in its infancy - new tapes related to The Conjure were gradually coming out. Therefore, Universal announced the work on the Dark World - an interweaving of stories in which (at least!) Mummy, Dracula, the Invisible Man and Frankenstein should appear. In 2017, the first tape of the future franchise came out - a commercially successful, but catastrophically unsuccessful "Mummy" with Tom Cruise and Sofia Butella. The “Dark World” could have ended on this, but in 2020 he had an unexpected savior - Australian Lee Wonnell, who made a name for himself as a co-author of the bloody Saws and Astral, and now he took up the modernization of the cult Invisible Man »Herbert Wells.

I think Vonnell fans will not be surprised by the fact that the director managed to revive a long-forgotten story. The surprise is rather that the screenwriting horror wasn’t shot not just another bloody attraction, but chose a bold approach - turned the classic piece upside down and turned it into a thriller about an abusive relationship. At the center of this interpretation is Cecilia Cass (Kate Moss), a woman who, one night, having the courage to run away from her rich and unbalanced tyrant guy. But this is not enough - despite the fact that Cecilia finds shelter with a long-time friend, a policeman, she still does not feel safe. The heroine is sure that the former will stop looking for her only when she dies - and once she is really informed that the man committed suicide, and still left her five million inheritance. On this tape could have ended - if it had not been a horror called "The Invisible Man." Instead of the long-awaited peace, Cecilia gets more reason for fear - she constantly thinks that someone is watching her, small things disappear from the house, and relatives begin to suspect that the poor woman is losing meaning.
